John started his professional life as a solicitor. He went on to work with the Quakers at their United Nations Office in Geneva, and then with the Mennonite Central Committee in Burundi, Central Africa, supporting grass-roots peace efforts within the context of the civil war. On returning to the UK in 1996, John spent four years creating, managing and developing City of York Council?s mediation service.

In 2001 he became a freelance consultant and simultaneously joined Framework. He was until 2007 a Conciliator under the Disability and Discrimination Act?s Disability Conciliation Service. At various times he has served as volunteer, staff member and management committee member within the voluntary sector.

Like all Framework members, John is committed to equality, social justice and ethical practice.

He has a post-graduate Certificate in Management and Leadership, and an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Groupwork skills). He is the author of "Responding to Community Conflict: A review of neighbourhood mediation", Joseph Rowntree Foundation; and "A Tour of John Heron's Feeling and Personhood", Oasis Press.
