Our history

When Framework began in 1985 it was one of the first consultancies dedicated to supporting the non-profit sector. Consultancy was well established in the commercial sector at that time, but its approach did not suit public and voluntary agencies, which face different challenges.

Framework was set up to model good organisational principles and practice based on a firm ethical foundation.

Over two decades, Framework’s clients have included Save the Children, WWF, Amnesty International, Swedish Mission Council, Friends of the Earth, British Red Cross, English Heritage and many others, both large and small.

Framework operates as a network of self-employed consultants based across the UK. There are presently four members of Framework: Brenda Lipson, Bruce Britton, John Gray and Katherine Stoessel. (For details see Who We Are)

Since Framework's early days we have maintained continuity around our shared values whilst actively embracing the change and challenge that new members bring to the network.

Past Framework consultants include Penny Sharland, Phil Hope MP, Sarah Hargreaves, Moira Halliday, Andrew Woodgate, Kevin Ford, Mary Maybin and Tim Pickles.
